Crime & Regulatory Offences
Peter Cooke is experienced in all areas of criminal work and related disciplines, acting both for the prosecution (Grade IV since 1997) and for defence, with increasing frequency as leading counsel.
He regularly handles cases of the utmost complexity and sensitivity including major conspiracies, drug importations, homicide, historic sexual abuse, computer and internet crime, fraud and money laundering, and cases involving RIPA and sensitive or specialist policing techniques (e.g. Aujla & Others (1998) 2 Cr App R 16, CA: admissibility of foreign telephone intercepts and R v Platten [2006] CLR 920, CA.: admissibility of “evesdrop” evidence as between conspirators).
Peter also undertakes regulatory and trading standards work. His recent regulatory experience includes prosecuting for the Government of South Georgia (Falkland Islands) regarding breaches of international conservation measures in the South Atlantic fisheries.
Peter is currently studying for a master’s degree in Environmental Law.
Police Law
He has particular experience in conducting misconduct hearings for various forces across the country. He also practises in the areas of civil actions involving wrongful arrest, false imprisonment and malicious prosecution, trespass to goods or land, Proceeds of Crime, Anti-Social Behaviour and Sexual Offences Prevention Orders and Firearms licensing.
General Common Law
Peter is instructed in claimant and defendant work with a particular interest in the health & safety and employment fields.
